Chapter Five: Breaking

We sat in Wendy’s, eating burgers and fries. “Hey, after this do you guys want to go play D.D.R?” I asked, looking around the table.

Everyone nodded, but Demyx and Axel looked at us like we were from Mars. “What’s D.D.R?” they asked in unison.

Fake gasps erupted from the table. “You don’t know how to play D.D.R?!” everyone exclaimed, making them both jump a little. They shook their heads and everyone just stared.

“It’s okay, you guys. We’ll show you how to play it.” I reassured them and took a long sip of my sprite.

We finished eating and walked across the street to the mall. As we entered the arcade, Roxas said, “So, who’s first in this game?”

I stepped up and said, “I’m willing and ready to join!” I smiled.

He smirked back and asked me, “You willing to make this a little interesting?”

I grinned and folded my arms across my chest, “Are you willing to make it interesting? Or are you scared I may beat you?” I challenged him.

He stepped up onto the game and turned back to me. “How much are you willing to wager?” He leaned against the game controls.

I climbed up onto the other pad and crossed my arms and stared him down. “Shall we say twenty munni?” He grinned and nodded.

“You guys make things way too complicated!” Selphie said from behind.

I laughed and scanned the playlist. “What about ‘I So Hate Consequences’?” I looked over at him, he nodded and I selected the song and hit the play button.

The song started and the game started. It went on for a while and I started to get tired, but I kept going. Suddenly the game came to and end and I hopped down and sat down in a swivel chair. My screen had a smallish size star and Roxas’ flashed a big gold one. “I won, now where is my munni?” he asked, holding out his hand. I pulled my wallet out of my back pocket and handed him the money.

“Good job, little sister. He only beat you by ten points.” Demyx said, standing next to me.

I looked up at him, “Really? I thought he beat me by a lot more.” I laughed and looked at the watch on Demyx’s arm. “Shoot, you guys. Sorry to ditch, but I’ve got to go!” I said standing up.

“Why? What’s the rush?” Demyx asked looking confused.

I grabbed Roxas’ sweater from a chair and turned to him, “I’m late for work. I told Cid I’d be in by three, and it’s already five after.” I said. “I also need a ride to the board shop.” I said looking around the group.

“I’ll give you a ride. I need to go to the shop, anyways.” Roxas said, grabbing his car keys from his pocket. “And I want my sweater back tonight.” he said, pointing at the black hoodie in my hands.

“Hey, I want to come. I want to see what this board shop looks like.” Axel said walking up beside me.

I nodded and hugged everyone goodbye. “Let’s hang out tomorrow.” I said as I hugged Demyx.

“Yeah, how’s the skate park sound?” he asked.

I smiled, nodded and waved as I followed Axel and Roxas out of the arcade and into the parking lot. “Shotgun!” I yelled and ran towards the car.

“Oh no you don’t!” Axel said and ran after me.

I got to the car first and grasped the handle. But as I did I felt two strong arms grab me around the waist and lift me off the ground. “Hey, no fair!” I yelled as he gently set me down on the ground and climb in.

Roxas walked up laughing and climbed in. “Get in, Leckie!” he called from inside and started up the car. I jumped up and slid into the back seat. Roxas started the car and backed out of his parking space. I leaned forward between the front seats and turned on the radio. ‘Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy Tonight’ by Fall Out Boy began to play. It started quiet then started to get louder. I leaned back and stared out the window as the song echoed through the small car.

“Isn’t this group, like, emo?” Axel asked from the front seat.

I shrugged. “They’re a good group.” I said nonchalant and sat quietly for the rest of the fifteen minute drive to the board shop. Axel and Roxas talked the entire time.

We soon pulled into the parking lot and I quickly jumped out and ran into the store. “Where have you been?!” Cid, the manager called from behind the front counter.

“Sorry I’m late!” I called back as I ran into the back room to change. I pulled on a navy blue t-shirt with ‘Cid’s Board Shop’ written on the back in white letters. I walked out pulling my hair into a redone ponytail.

“So, where were you?” Cid asked again as he walked out from behind the counter to the back.

“Sorry, my brother is in town and I was hanging out with him all day.” I said as I walked behind the counter.

“Alright, well I’m gonna get going. You guys lock up when you’re done.” Cid said, tossing me the keys and waving as he left.

“We? Who’s we?” Roxas asked, giving me a confused look.

“That would be me.” a voice answered from the doorway of the shop.

“YOU!?” Roxas exclaimed as Seifer walked into the store. Roxas turned back to me and whispered, “You never told me you worked with him!” he hissed.

I shrugged and replied, “You never asked. Hey, Seifer!” I waved. He waved back and walked into the back room. Roxas gave me this weird look, and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. “What’s the big deal? He and I are friends. Be nice” I hissed.

Seifer walked out wearing an identical shirt to mine. “Here.” I said, tossing him the keys.

He caught it with one hand and handed me his board. “Slide this under the desk?” he asked and walked to go help a customer. I slid it underneath the counter and faced Roxas and Axel again.

“Hey, Axel, want to check out the skate park we have in the back?” I asked, jerking a thumb over my shoulder.

“You guys got a skate park?” he asked in shock.

I nodded and grabbed my board off the back wall and opened a door marked ‘Alley’. It led out to a back alley that had a huge skate park in it. I handed Axel the board and he eagerly took it and started skating around.

"Hey, Leckie.” a voice said from beside me.

I turned and saw Xemnas walking towards me. “Hey, what’s new?” I asked him. Xemnas fixed the equipment in the park.

“Nothing much, how about you?” he asked, placing a hand on my shoulder.

“Nothing really. Oh, my brother’s in town.” I said happily. He smiled back. Xemnas was somewhere in his mid twenties.

“This park is sweet!” Axel said, rolling up.

“Hey Axel, this is Xemnas. You guys talk, I’ve got to go back in and help Seifer.” I said waving. They waved back and started a conversation about who knows what.

I opened the door and saw Seifer and Roxas fighting about the soccer team again. I rolled my eyes and walked over. “Alright, you guys. Seriously stop. We're in public and this is not cool!” They both stopped and stared at me. “Can we make this mutual territory?” I asked pleadingly. The both nodded and Roxas mumbled something under his breath.

“Hey Leckie, I got to go. I’ll see you back at the dorm.” he said, going to the back to grab Axel. “See you later." he said giving me a quick hug as he and Axel left. I waved as they walked out the door.

“So, how has your day been Seifer?” I asked him as I walked to put away the board Axel had handed me as he left.

He gave a small laugh and said, “It’s been fine. How come you’re so cheerful?” He arched and eyebrow and eyed me suspiciously.

I smiled and simply said, “Who wants to know?” He gave me an annoyed smile, he hated not knowing stuff. I laughed, “My brother’s in town and I spent most of the day with him.” I smiled as I stacked shelves with parts for skateboards.

“Sweet, that must have been fun.” he said, cleaning up around the cash register. I nodded and continued stacking.

The rest of the day went pretty slowly. Finally it was nine thirty, closing time. I changed in the back room back and grabbed my stuff. I walked to the desk and grabbed the phone to call Roxas.

“Hey, do you need a ride?” Seifer asked, as he grabbed his board from under the counter.

“Yeah, I was about to call Roxas for a ride.” I said slowly punching in the numbers.

“How about I give you a ride?” he asked, pulling on his sweater.

I nodded, “Sure, that would be great.” I hung up the phone and pulled on Roxas’ black hoodie.

I followed him out of the store. He quickly locked up and led me to his mustang convertible. I opened the door, slipped in and sank into the soft leather seats. I pulled on my seat belt as he started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. As usual I turned on the radio and leaned against the seat and listened to the music lull out of the radio. We spent the entire fifteen minute car ride in silence listening to the radio.

We soon came to the school property and slowly cruised into the student parking. Seifer turned off the car and looked at me. “Thanks for the ride.” I said and started to get out.

“Leckie, wait.” he said. I stopped and turned to look at him. "Uh, do you, well… have a date for the dance?” He seemed at a total loss for words, which wasn’t like Seifer at all. He was always cool and right to the point, almost full of himself. But right then he seemed scared, vulnerable.

I stared at him a few seconds, unsure of how to respond. “No, I don’t have a date yet.” I said slowly.

“Oh, cool.” and he opened his car door. I quickly opened mine and walked briskly up to the dorm doors. “Leckie! Wait for a second, please?” he asked from behind me. I stopped and heard my heart pound in my head; I hope he wasn’t asking what I thought he was. He walked up beside me and looked me straight in the eyes. “Do… that is, will you go to the dance with me?”

I felt my heart stop for and instant as I processed the information. He gave me this little puppy look that not many girls could resist. “I….uh, I have to go.” I turned and ran into the building and up the stairs.

I flung open my door and collapsed on my bed and sobbed. I had no idea why I was crying. Stop crying, you’re so stupid. Why are you crying!? I screamed in my head. My roommate was out for the night so I had the whole room to myself.

I heard a soft knock on the door and a voice asking me, “Are you okay?” I turned and saw Namine standing in the doorway of my dark room. I shook my head and looked at my feet. I kicked off my shoes and leaned against the wall, pulling my knees in tightly. “Do you wanna talk?” she asked, her voice soothing and comforting.

I slowly got up and followed her down the hall to her room. “Roxas is out, so we can talk.” she said as she popped a movie into the DVD player. It made the room seem not as empty, having the glow from the screen fill the once dark room.

We sat on her bed talking as the movie went on playing. I soon started to cheer up. “I have no idea why I was crying, it just happened.” I said, looking at her for an answer.

“Well, maybe you were just scared. Did you want anyone else to ask you to the dance?” She grabbed a soda from the small fridge that was at the far end of the room.

“Well, I kind of wanted Riku to ask me. But when Seifer asked, I thought that maybe he never would, and that maybe Seifer would be the only one who ever asked. That started to scare me, and I didn’t know what to do, so I just ran...” I said, taking a sip of her soda.

“Scared of what?” Roxas asked as he walked into the room.

“Of the monsters under my bed.” I said giggling.

He smiled and sat down beside me and Namine and the three of us watched the rest of the movie. Before the movie ended I fell into a deep, peaceful, dreamless sleep and drifted into bliss.
