Chapter One: Love Among Friends
“Where is he? Where is he? Where is this beautiful guy? Whose gonna take me so high?
Those words were ringing in my head as I made my way down the silent hallways of Twilight High Boarding School. When would the guy I “loved” come around?
“Leckie! Wait up!” I turned and saw my brother Roxas running after me.
Roxas isn’t really my brother, of course. You see, my family... Well, I’m not really going to get into that but there were problems and I went to a foster home. I have an actual older brother, though. His name is Demyx, but he’s off attending college in Traverse Town. He goes to Traverse Town College of Technology with his best friend Axel. But anyways, about Roxas... a good friend of the family took me in as a foster child. Yuffie and Roxas have been friends since well, basically since forever. She and Roxas are like brother and sister. So naturally, I have only seen Roxas as my brother. And then there's my cousin Sora.
Roxas ran up to me and draped an arm over my shoulder. “Hey!” he said happily, “You looked lonely so I though I would come join you.” I couldn’t help but smile at his cheerfulness. “Do you want to come to my room and watch Step Up with Namine and me?”
I looked up into his sapphire blue eyes. I was always jealous of them. My eyes were just a light blue but his were a stunning color. I always wanted my eyes to be sapphire blue. “Uhh, sure. But I have to meet Sora, Riku, Selphie, Hayner, Pence, Namie, Kairi, and the others at the arcade later.
“Riku, eh?” He gave a smirk and I felt my cheeks turn red. “I knew you liked him!” he laughed.
“Do not!” I said back, but my cheeks had gone from pink to red.
“Okay, so say I do have a crush on him.” I asked him timidly. “Do you know if he likes me?” I looked at him with a hopeful grin.
“Well, he...“ Roxas was cut short by his cousin Sora who came running up behind us.
“Hey guys! What are you doing?” he asked.
“Going to Roxas and Namine’s room to watch Step Up.” I said as I handed him one of my books that I was about to drop. If he was going to be there he may as well help.
Roxas and Namine share a room but they’re the only boy/girl bunkmates at the school. When Namine arrived there were no rooms left. You weren’t allowed to have three to a room, and Roxas’ room was the only one with a single occupant. So, they ended up sharing. In this school you’re normally not allowed to have guys in girls rooms and vice versa. Roxas and Namine were the only ones who could get away with it.
“Wanna come and watch?” Roxas asked.
“Sure!” he replied smiling.
“Hey, where’s Kairi?” I asked, puzzled. Ever since he and Kairi had told the group that they like each other, they had spent almost every day together. It was rare to not see them together.
He sighed and said, “She’s at the mall with Selphie.”
Roxas laughed and said “So, you coming or what?”
Sora looked at him with a what-else-do-you-think-I-should-do look on his face and said, “Of course I’ll come.”
We entered the dormitory and walked up to the second floor and into Roxas’ room. Namine was sitting on her bed drawing in her sketchbook. “Kept me waiting long enough?” she asked sarcastically.
“I picked up a couple of strays.” Roxas said jerking a thumb over his shoulder at me and Sora.
“HEY!” we said in unison and threw pillows at his head.
“Okay guys, let’s watch the movie.” Namine said and she popped it in.
We all climbed onto Roxas’ bed because it had the best view of the TV. Roxas sat next to Namine. They both like each other and they were long lots friends from their childhood or something. Sora and I propped pillows against the head board. I leaned against Sora’s shoulder as the movie started to play. I didn’t really pay much attention to it, though. I was mainly day dreaming about Riku.
After a while I looked up at the clock. It read 6:15. I sat up and said to Sora, “We’ve got to got meet the others. We’re late!”
He rubbed his eyes and looked at his watch, “You’re right! Sorry guys, gotta take a rain check.”
Namine and Roxas looked over, “No prob. Hey Leckie, say 'hi' to Riku for me will you?” he said with a laugh.
I felt my cheeks turn a slight shade of pink as I leaned over and punched him in the arm.
“Ow.” He rubbed him arm, still laughing. I slipped off the bed and followed Sora out the door.
Once we were out of the dormitory Sora looked at me and asked, “What was that all about?” He arched and eyebrow.
“Huh?” I gave him the 'dumb blonde' look. We walked over to the student parking and climbed into his ’67 mustang.
“You never answered my question, you know.” he stated, starting his car.
“Well, umm… Would you believe random bursts of anger?” I asked, feeling my cheeks burn.
He laughed and said, “No, I don’t think so.” He slowly pulled out of the school and onto the highway; it was about a ten minute drive to the mall. “So….?” he began again.
I sighed and said. “Okay, so maybe I have this teeny weenie itsy bitsy, huge crush on Riku.” I looked out the window of the car and watched the town zoom by in a blur.
“Really? Does he know? Why didn’t you tell me?” he pummeled me with questions.
“Yes, I don’t think so, and because I didn’t even want Roxas to know. You won’t tell him will you?”
He gave me a sideways glance. “No, why would I?” he asked, a little shocked.
“I don’t know. Guys tell each other these things, right?”
He didn’t get a chance to reply. We drove into the mall parking lot and climbed out. He walked over and bumped me in the arm by accident. Out of fun I bumped him back. It soon turned into a bump fight and ended with me jumping on his back and him piggy-backing me into the arcade.
Everyone was standing around some Pac-man type game, watching Selphie play. They all stopped and looked when Sora and I walked in. We laughed too hard to care, though. Sora gently slid me off his back and he and I stood there giggling under their gaze.
“So, uh, hi I guess.” Riku said.
“What have you two been up to?” Kairi asked. She wasn’t mad about me and Sora goofing around, she knew that he was like a brother to me.
“Well, umm, you see…” Sora tried to explain but he was laughing too hard.
“Where have you guys been?” Selphie asked. "We’ve been waiting for like an hour! We’ve already used all of our coins.” She gave a small pout.
“I’m sorry, Selphie.” I said apologetically.
“Make the sucking up good!” she said jokingly.
“Okay, uh…” I thought.
“Hurry up, Leckie. We don’t have all day.” Hayner said, looking at his watch.
“Alright! How about I buy you like the best thing of chocolates ever and the world’s perfect accessory for the dance on Saturday?”
She gave a small squeal and grabbed me in a crushing hug. “That’s the best sucking up ever!” she laughed.
“Glad you're happy, Selphie, but need air!” I gasped.
She let go of me so fast that I fell hard to the ground. “Oh, sorry.” she said and helped me up.
“How you feeling there, kid?” Sora asked, ruffling up my hair.
“Kid!? Who are you calling a kid? You’re only two months older than me!”
He smiled and shrugged his shoulders, “Ehh, two months is two months.”
Selphie stood there tapping her foot, “Come on, we’ve got some shopping to do!” she said grabbing my arm and leading me out of the arcade and into the mall. The others laughed and followed.
